I'm a 60-ish father and husband who is fortunate enough to have lived an interesting and active life. I've had two fantasy series, the War of the Blades and The Legion of Riders, published, and I have several other fantasy and SF projects in the works. I like to keep many irons in the fire at once, so my work experiences include such diverse occupations as automotive mechanic, cowboy, photographer, psychiatric tech, paralegal assistant, bouncer, and medical billing clerk. I studied martial arts for over 30 years. I've been a soldier and an emergency medical technician, and I served as the chief of a volunteer ambulance squad. I was a diamond courier for a while, and later owned a working kennel where I trained dogs for law enforcement as we ...more

J.D. Hallowell Thanks for asking! Yes, there are plans for at least two more books in that world. One is in edits right now, and I'm hoping it will be released this year.

Thanks for the great question, Jeffrey! Sorry it took me so long to get to it.

I got the idea for the Dragon Blades when I was thinking about what a dragon egg would be like. What would the shell be made of? What properties would it have? Would the shards be of any use or value?

So, I was thinking about this tough, durable, mineralized material, and it occurred to me that both our earliest and our most modern blades have been made out of stone and ceramic materials, and that led to the thought about how cool it would be to have a custom blade made from a dragon's egg...

Sadly, I don't have any illustrations of them, but they are described in a fair amount of detail in the books if any of you artists out there want to remedy that situation. (Subtle hint) (less)

Dragon Home is finally here!

Happy Holidays! It's been a long time coming, but Dragon Home is finally out in e-book.
With any luck, print and audio editions of both Dragon Home and Dragon Justice will be coming later in the year.
Many thanks to all of you who have been waiting so patiently (or impatiently, as the case may be). I sincerely hope you won't have to wait so long again. Read more of this blog post »

“The two guards inside stuck their spears through the peek holes in each door trying to skewer him. He simply stepped back and said aloud, “Geneva, they seem to be having trouble finding the key. “Here,” she replied, “use mine.” She crouched low and drove her talons through the three-inch-thick, iron-bound oak and pulled both doors out of the portal.”

“Fantasy is escapist, and that is its glory. If a soldier is imprisioned by the enemy, don't we consider it his duty to escape?. . .If we value the freedom of mind and soul, if we're partisans of liberty, then it's our plain duty to escape, and to take as many people with us as we can!”
