Journalist Rena George, author of The Loveday Mysteries - a murder mystery series set in Cornwall - began her fiction career writing romances for the DC Thomson Pocket Novels. To start a new day and know that I can spend most of it simply writing, is my idea of heaven. To sit in front of my computer, or curl up on the sofa with a notebook and pen, and enter that world of make believe is such an incredible privilege.
My decision to self-publish was possibly one of the best I have ever made. I love being responsible for all my writerly decisions, creating the kind of book that I want to write.
Since I first became an indie author just over two years ago, my portfolio of books has steadily grown. I now have nine novels and some short story collections out there, and I’m happy to say that the sales climb higher every month.

How do you deal with writer’s block?

I know many writers like…moreI can't honestly say I experience writer's block, but I think that has more to do with planning rather than actually writing. I know many writers like to 'wing it' when they start a new novel, letting the characters take them where they will, and trusting that the plot will unfurl as they go along. I really admire writers who can do this, but it’s not for me. Characters inevitably take over anyway, and it’s wonderful when they do because then you know that your plot is working. But I need a plan, a framework on which to hang my story. That's not saying I will always rigidly stick to it, quite the opposite, usually, but it has to be in place as a kind of starting point.(less)
