Brandy Potter lives in Maryland with her daughter and pets. She has been writing since she was 9 years old. She has several published poems, but Venomous Lives was her first published novel. Currently in development are a crime novel, a mafia story, a screenplay and another semi autobiographical story that is a long lost love story.

Brandy works in various genres including Sci-Fi Fantasy, Crime, and many others. She says she is not genre driven but rather she is character or story driven. She finds her stories come to her in many ways. Sometimes she sees a specific scene in a dream or just in her head. Sometimes , as with her current crime novel she has a specific plot in mind from the outset.

Sometimes she creates the characters and the story develops around them.

Her character devlopment focuses on the psychology of the every day person, fictionalized visions of the everyday people overcoming their conflicts. She enjoys watching people and observing their behaviors. What makes us and at times what breaks us. She likes strong female leads but maintains that they are strong in different ways. She also shies away from the industry pre-packaged protagnists. Her fans say that her characters are so developed that they often have a hard time letting them go and are always routing for a sequel.

Her writing style is descriptive, but not overly so and she does allow her readers minds to find their own direction in certain aspects because, as she so aptly puts it, "If I wanted to read a book that tells me what to think and do I would buy a non-fiction book." She also thinks that actions relay the story rather than just telling it.

Her writing influences consist of David Eddings, Jane Austin, Rudyard Kipling, J.R.R. Tolkein, Nora Roberts and Steven King. Brandy is an avid reader who prefers printed books to e-readers because, "There is nothing like the smell and the feel of a book. Besides, as a single mother the only time that I have to read is when I may not be able to have electronics."

She has a writers club that meets every so often and is often sought for advice from other writers. She hopes one day to teach creative writing or at the very lest to develop a writing workshop.

Question: How do you feel about giving bad/negative reviews?

As an author and a book blogger, I know how important reviews are for people. I am constantly begging people who read my book (soon to be plural) to leave a review. With the algorithms on Amazon, the only way to move your book is to have reviews. That being said, I know that a bad review could kill a new author’s book quickly.
