Free, Live Internet Presentation to Your Book Club
Your book club can participate in a free, live, multimedia presentation about the historical context of the thriller, "The Cottoncrest Curse," which Publisher's Weekly calls a "gripping debut mystery." The Chicago CBA Record says"The story is gripping, the writing is masterful. Rubin has struck ‘gold’ in his debut novel.”
And, Country Roads Magazine says: "So as not to ruin the fun, I’ll leave you with this: the scene where the clumsy deputy drops a severed head is neither the goriest, nor the most shocking, nor the funniest part of the book."
"The Cottoncrest Curse" is published by the award-winning LSU Press, which also published both "A Confederacy of Dunces" and the annotated "12 Years a Slave" on which the movie was based.

Do thriller readers care if solid research underpins the story?
It seems to me that solid research is the secret weapon of a solid thriller. We might not use all that we have learned in our novel, but the knowledge we acquire as authors in doing research adds veracity and believability to what we write. Not doing thorough research is like cooking something “nice,” but omitting the pinch of salt or secret ingredient that would transform the “nice” into “great.” We might not recognize the secret ingredient when we taste the meal, but we sure recognize its absence when we compare items.
The university press that published my thriller, “The Cottoncrest Curse,” engaged historians to vet the historical aspects of my novel, and reviewers have found that the solid historical footing on which the novel is based adds to the enjoyment of the story. As one reviewer said, It’s the history woven into the tale that grabbed me most in Michael H. Rubin’s debut novel, The Cottoncrest Curse.

Thriller Authors and Boring Lawyers
Do lawyers write only in "legalese," an obscure language comprehensible only to other lawyers?
What can lawyers learn from the authors of thrillers that can help them write more clearly? In fact, what can we all learn about good writing from thrillers?
Here's an article that tells you!

A thrilling Halloween read
It was fun to see that Deep South Magazine calls me a "Man of Mystery" and says that my novel, "The Cottoncrest Curse" is a "thrilling Halloween read."
The Magazine goes on to state:
"Michael H. Rubin’s thriller The Cottoncrest Curse can definitely be judged by its cover. With the title in white and a raised drip of blood coming down from the “o” and the “n,” this debut novel is both terrifying and tactile at first glance. Open to the prologue, in which a docent in an antebellum costume describes a gruesome murder-suicide on the stairwell of a massive plantation home, and you’ll be hooked on Rubin’s captivating story."
