In Chapter 5 of "Four Years Before The Mast" you have McMurray explain that Mug means "Mariners Under Guidance - or Midshipman Under Guidance, depends on who you talk to." Is mug being an acronym something you found in documents from the St. Mary's era? I'm class of 1971, and never heard either of those expressions. A mug was just... a mug!

Sorry for the long delay on this reply. It's been a few years, but from what I recall "Mug" originated at the USNA as "Midshipmen Under Guidance" and then was adopted by the New York Nautical School. Mug as a term was used by them at least as early as the 1890s which shows on archival documents at Fort Schuyler.(less)
