The depiction of public penance, the tension between local clergy and radical movements, the fragile authority of ritual during catastrophe… everything feels authentically medieval without ever slipping into lecture. Instead, the history becomes the horror. The world collapses, and ordinary people cling to beliefs that hurt them because they are the only things left to hold.

The author’s use of untranslated Latin is a stroke of brilliance.
