Without giving away too much of the story, the idea for The Dark Shines came from two separate occurrences.
The first was when I was on hold on the phone to a company, and talking to a friend while I was waiting. I’d had the “your call may be monitored or recorded” message at the start of the call, and that got me wondering about whether they were listening to what I was saying when I was on hold. That’s where the idea surrounding privacy around the technology we’ve accepted into our homes came from.
Then I had another two characters in my mind, and I started to write a short story about them, Brian and Joan, who ended up making the final cut.
As I was writing them, I was reading a few other books that moved away from the traditional narrative structure, and so I decided to do the same with my writing, hence why I ended up with four separate stories interwoven into one novel, (less)
