Review of Anthelion 1996 by Henry Virgin

'Anthelion' is a complex and intricate love poem that captures the multidimensional nature of love. The poet skillfully uses language and imagery to explore the various facets of love, including its joys, pains, fears, and pleasures. Throughout the poem, we see the poet grappling with the complexity of love, its paradoxes, and contradictions.
The poem is divided into 13 parts, each with its own unique theme and mood. The poet takes us on a journey through various emotions, experiences, and perspectives, from the heights of ecstasy to the depths of despair. Love is presented as a force that can bring people together, but also tear them apart.
Written in 1996, between Good Friday and Easter Monday, it charts the tale of a wandering voice, caught elsewhere, suffering a displacement of being, unrequited in love, heltering through the streets of London, through yards of stone, via shapeshifters, descending into hell – armed only with an iris, sheathed like a sword stick in a black umbrella, vanquishing the demonic, ascending out of hell and reappearing in Hyde Park, to catch a cab out of town, leaving the lies and the hymns behind, with a basket filled with strong rioja, over oceans, continents, deserts and trekking through mountain passes, onwards, with love, and the lack of it, as ever the guiding principle.
Experiencing an array of characters and situations, the protagonist ventures forth. Part soliloquy, part love poem, part spirit flight and invocation, this lyrical abstraction arouses the soul with a sonorous flow of visions and ideas, blending insight and humour.
One of the most striking aspects of the poem is the use of surreal and dreamlike imagery. The poet employs vivid and fantastical descriptions to create a sense of otherworldliness and mystery. These images, such as the garden of real dreams, the sabres in light, and the theatrical skies, add a layer of depth and complexity to the poem.
Another notable aspect of the poem is the voice of the poet. The poet's voice is at times melancholic, at times whimsical, and at times passionate. It is a voice that is deeply introspective, reflecting on the nature of love and the human experience. The poet's voice is also highly personal, revealing intimate details of the poet's own experience of love and loss.
Overall, "Anthelion" is a powerful and evocative love poem that captures the many nuances and complexities of love. It is a testament to the power of language and poetry to convey the deepest human emotions and experiences. The poem reminds us that love is not just a feeling, but a force that shapes our lives and defines our very existence.

Review of Hot Pink Peach by Henry Virgin

Hot Pink Peach is a book of poetry containing two poems : 'The Cerebral Sacristy' and 'Zapadny'. Written between 1996 and 1999, in London and Rostov-on-Don, the poetry is lyrical, experimental, abstract, akin to the verse of a dadaist poete maudit, with strains of the French and Russian symbolists. By no means light, this apostatic, confessional, transgressive, 'sturm und drang' collection is presented as the eponymously invoked Hot Pink Peach, fragged from the furnaces of poetic development.
The book's opening poem, 'The Cerebral Sacristry,' offers encouragement and inspiration to those fighting through their outlandish territories, using rich language and abstract concepts. The language of the poems is rich and dense, full of metaphors and abstract concepts that invite the reader to engage with the text on multiple levels. The imagery of electrical abstractions within one's mind and the interplay of mysterious organisms creates a sense of otherworldliness and invites the reader to contemplate the complexities of the human psyche, mortality, and the meaning of existence and divinity which adds to its philosophical depth. The use of enjambment and irregular line breaks contributes to the overall sense of disorientation and dreamlike quality of the text. The second poem, 'Zapadny,' is a dense and complex exploration of themes such as love, pain, anger, and death. It highlights isolation and the struggle to find meaning in life. The vivid images at the end of the poem create a sense of suffering and despair. Both poems are unique in their language, themes and poetic devices. They share a complex and dense quality exploring perseverance in the darkness, the human experience and self-discovery using powerful and evocative language, vivid and abstract imagery which convey a sense of emotional distress. Overall, the book is thought-provoking and enigmatic, resonating with readers who appreciate abstract and challenging poetry.
