Emrah Altınok works in the narrow, live seam where critical thought stops being commentary and becomes a made thing — a poem, a stencil on a wall, a photograph, a walk through a contested neighborhood. Born in 1980 in Ağrı, on Turkey's eastern edge, he came to theory late and to language early, and much of what he later did to poetry was an attempt to strip it back to that first condition — sound and breath before sense.

The project culminated in 'Çöt Mendime Görsektimi Vuru?' (Norgunk, 2010), a title that cannot be cleanly rendered into English because untranslatability is the argument. Norgunk — a boutique house known for Deleuze, Spinoza and Latour rather than for verse — published it precisely because it read less like a poetry collection than like a philosophical manifesto in disguise.
And it is. The book runs two long poems in parallel. One, 'Marx and Allah', holds militarism, political Islam, capital and the 1980 coup in a single blaspheming, tender, obscene breath — even splicing a verbatim lumbar-MRI report into the verse, the state read as a spine under strain. The other, the 'Treatises of Explosion', is a mock-academic system: a theory of the broken that keeps refuting itself, every assertion shadowed by its own bracketed negation, an abstract that decays letter by letter into pure noise in order to enact its own thesis.
What lifts this above avant-garde performance is that it is saturated with theory and, in the same gesture, profoundly suspicious of theory as costume — as wary of name-dropping Deleuze as it is fluent in doing so ("the big word is empty: little theory, much meaning"). The poem eats its own footnotes.
This is the same instinct that drives Altınok's parallel life as an urban researcher. His scholarship on gentrification, housing and the right to the city, and his 'walks for spatial justice' through Istanbul's vanishing neighborhoods, share one move with his poetics: dismantling the frame — the page, the plan, the 'levha' — and pushing the work off it, into the street. His stencils across Beyoğlu and Kadıköy, which he calls 'proactive poetry', are the literal form of that conviction — that the impasse of language is not solved on the page but in the city, in real time, where at last the seen and the seer can meet. Across poetry, photography, the drone-and-'zikr' improvisations of his band 'etreh', and the neighborhood walk, the discipline stays constant: to think in public, and to build the thought from whatever material the moment hands him.
