The Shoemaker's Wife
mix a Sgroppino: 1/2 c prosecco, 1 T vodka, 1/4 c chilled lemon sorbet, and chopped mint - slip on a pair of Blahniks and enjoy this slow but ultimately old-fashioned story.
Though I found the characters to be a bit "too good" for reality, I did enjoy the author's great detail and struggle of two italian immigrants. With seemingly impossible coincidences that keep bringing the two main characters together and I did wish the story would move along faster, it made me reveal in the details of early New York. A worthy read.

Fatale Beauty
I had little interest in tackling this subject matter - Amanda Knox guilty or innocent? I live part time in Italy and thought I knew it all from the papers. Turns out not at all. This is a mesmerizing read. Well researched from all sides, the author Nina Burleigh was there, and Seattle and all points in between. I cannot recommend this book enough. She brings together all elements, Italian judicial system, naieve American girl on her own for the the first time - it is a compelling story. So sip something refreshing like a Pineapple Maze and figure out this story:
1 part run
1 part rum
a splash of grenadine
and a splash of frizzante water
pour over ice and don't put down the book.

Carnival for the Dead
Its an extremely rare thing when I do not finish a book. I'm always hopefully a book is a slow burn and will turn around - but this book was a killer for me. I couldn't finish it. So confusing as to what was going on - not that I even care - not one of Hewson's better books - and I am a fan. So skip this and instead pour a Spritz:
2 oz prosecco
1 1/2 oz Aperol
splash of Pellegrino
a green olive
and pick up another book by Hewson he is a really fine author when he sticks with his Nic Costa character.
