I Had No Need of That Hypothesis

In 1802, or thereabouts, Napoleon asked the mathematician Pierre-Simon Laplace why his treatise on celestial mechanics contained no mention of God. Laplace’s reply has been quoted ever since: I had no need of that hypothesis.²

The answer was correct. Newtonian mechanics, as Laplace had extended and formalized it, could account for the behavior of the solar system without invoking divine interve
