Lucky Day!
I love that we went backpacking, two badass girls, brave and open to adventure. I’m even glad that it was scary and dangerous. We are going home with more than a backcountry tale, we have a grizzly story. Where we’ll casually mention that we were backpacking in Denali, and our audience over the years will look at us, and think “Wow, she’s really amazing”, and they will be right.

An Eerie Coincidence
I live in Nevada. For many days now, children haven't been allowed to play outside, not even for recess at school.
For over a week, we've had air that is saturated in smoke from the Yosemite Rim Fire. The haze, ash, and dark smoke screen is strange enough, but I can't ignore the fact; the fire that is making it's way towards Yosemite National Park ignited the same day I published my new book.
(Since the fire began Aug. 19, the city has purchased about $600,000 in supplemental power,(http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/na...).
.(Paperback: 274 pages
Publisher: Danielle Rohr; 1 edition (August 19, 2013)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0615840957
ISBN-13: 978-0615840956)
(Note the date of the fire, and the date of publication)
The Coincidence is a bit more complicated than that : The book is about three teens who travel through the backwoods of California headed for Yosemite. As this fire continues to burn, I realized it's burning through the route of my fictional trio.
Two days ago, I laughed and mentioned to a friend "We'll see if the fire reaches White Wolf". Then: "Tioga Road, part of Highway 120, will be temporarily closed from Crane Flat to White Wolf as crews battle the massive Rim Fire, park superintendent Don Neubacher said in a written statement" (http://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article...).
The fire hasn't reached White Wolf, but the area is now closed and it seems that the fire may be headed in that direction.
I love unusual circumstances and coincidences, but this particular one resonates within me personally. I wrote explicitly about these places just outside the park boundary, and now they've burned away to a sad charred version of their former self. I can't ignore that the date I impulsively chose to publish this book, is the same date the fire started. And now, I'm choking on the smoke and ash a hundred miles away. Is there meaning in this odd connection, or do I just have too much time to dream up fantastical possibility?
