Winner of Mark Lawrence's 3rd Self Published Fantasy Blog Off (SPFBO) with Where Loyalties Lie

Rob J. Hayes has been a student, a banker, a marine research assistant, a chef, and a keyboard monkey more times than he cares to count. But eventually his love of fantasy and reading drew him to the life of a writer. He’s the author of the Amazon Best Selling The Heresy Within, the SPFBO-winning piratical swashbuckler Where Loyalties Lie, and the critically acclaimed Never Die.

The first novel is Where Loyalties Lie and the second is The Fifth Empire of Man. Both have a planned 2016 release from Ragnarok Publications.

I'm now currently working on a high fantasy adventure romp with an Avengers feel to it. Expect heroes, dragons, dark lords, and my usual dark humour.(less)

Really enjoyed this one. A fascinating look at terminal patriotism in a world under eternal siege. And plenty of guardsmen!

Cadia Stands!
Rob Hayes is 20% done with The Fall of Cadia: I have a history with Warhammer and 40k, and I've always been a guardsman at heart. So it's time to read about one of the biggest moments in 40k Imp Guard lore.

It was fine as far as mythology retellings go. But the prose feels very stilted, and the dialogue is often wooden.

I'll not be continuing with the series.

I have to admit, I didn't dig this one as much as book 1. My favourite character was reduced to pervy comic relief, and the whole book just felt like a rush from one set piece to the next. It was enjoyable enough to read and never dragged, but just f ...more

A truly bizarre way of telling a book, but Crichton made it work. Eaters of the Dead is the story of Beowulf, but re-imagined as low-fantasy instead of high. Told through the perspective of a witness, rather than the main character, an written as an ...more

Topics Mentioning This Author

“You say glory, necessity, pride; I say barbarity, greed, arrogance. War is a search for glory, for that particular sense of joy and satisfaction that comes from staking one's life on the outcome of a gamble. The search for a cheap thrill, with a cost too dear for Midas, and on a pretext that, more or less, amounts to 'My neighbour has a thing. I want it.”

“Power ain’t what ya reckon it’ll be. Don’t mean ya get ta do what ya want all the time; means ya gotta do what every other fucker wants. Much better bein’ the knife in the darkness than waitin’ fer it ta come for you.”
Rob J. Hayes, The Fifth Empire of Man

“Jezzet there isn't a man in this room who hasn't spent at least some time staring at you and you're without doubt the most graceful person I've ever seen. I'm sure you can find some way to distract them. Failing that just start ... you know ... killing people."
"Killing people?" [...]
"Yes. with a spoon if you like.”
Rob J. Hayes, The Heresy Within

“We teach girls shame. “Close your legs. Cover yourself.” We make them feel as though being born female they’re already guilty of something. And so, girls grow up to be women who cannot say they have desire. They grow up to be women who silence themselves. They grow up to be women who cannot say what they truly think. And they grow up — and this is the worst thing we do to girls — they grow up to be women who have turned pretense into an art form.”
