The Cuckoo's Calling

The Cuckoo's Calling (Cormoran Strike, #1) The Cuckoo's Calling by Robert Galbraith

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Now that the pseudonym's out of the bag, I hope Mr. Galbraith takes another spin around the tome. This was a classic yet modern detective tale, complete with an indispensable Girl Friday and a twisted family history that writhes to the surface in the form of...well, never mind; that would be a spoiler. All I will say is, if you like crime fiction and want to see everyone's favorite Harry Potter scribe do something completely different but not nearly as bitter as The Casual Vacancy, this one is definitely worth a read.

Farewell Summer

Farewell Summer Farewell Summer by Ray Bradbury

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I suppose it's fitting that I finished this on Labor Day Weekend. A sweet coda to Dandelion Wine, this book brings us back to Green Town and young Doug's struggles with youth, maturation, and mortality. Many of the same themes appear: boys being boys, the mysticism of the haunted ravine, and the wisdom of the old (in case the young actually want to hear it). It lacks some of the delicious lyricism of its precursor, but is definitely worth a read; and I would say if you're a Bradbury fan it's probably a must-read.
