Right out of the gate we’re faced with a kidnapping of a thus unknown woman named Chloe. A call to her mother informs her of the situation and just as quickly, a call is made to our protagonist to plea for help. What Jack doesn’t know, however, is this is no ordinary rescue mission and that this kidnapped woman has deeper ties to him than he could have ever known.

The beginning of the book goes into the history between Jack and Rochelle, mother of the kidnapped
woman. It’s a nice way to explain context and previous relationships without a dry recap through
discussion in the book. The chapters are short, easy to digest, and full of action. Howard knows that
readers who love thrillers like these are looking for a balance of action, storytelling and character depth. Howard is skilled at this game and presents his readers with just that. We get the action-driven shootout scenes, the feeling of tension as the story develops and it’s clear there is a bigger villain in the background beyond what seems like a simple kidnapping for ransom. We also get the complicated relationships that come with humans, human interaction and aging.

One thing that will delight female readers of this book, is that the women involved are not simple damsels to be rescued. That tends to be an over-arching theme in thrillers; women are either sexual objects to be desired and have no more depth than that, or they are frail beings that can’t possible save themselves and require someone else, usually a man, to free them. What I loved about this book is that while Chloe, a seemingly normal woman, is kidnapped, she doesn’t just cry or wait for someone to save her. She actively works with that is around her to attempt rescue of her own. This is refreshing to read and made the entire story that much more enjoyable.

If you are looking for the next installment in Jack Trench’s post-retirement life, then you must pick up a copy of Blood Promise by Mike Howard. If the author isn’t sure how the worlds they are creating are supposed to work, it can break immersion quite severely. In That Dark Edge by Theresa McGarry, our author is so comfortable with the worlds she has created it passes on to the reader. We accept the
realities our protagonist Hedda Tocq experiences because the writing is so smooth it would be fallacy to argue it. T-years are normal, humanity being genetically altered and exploring additional planets and species is normal.

The smoothness of McGarry’s writing will lure the reader into her world with ease. As Hedda investigates the culture of Vyssae, a planet with life that should not exist, she finds herself doing more than just observing. She is pulled into political tensions that are rising from cultural mistrust between the Vyssae and the Bastet, humanity’s new
moniker. To create a culture from imagination and have it be believable is a testament to McGarry’s writing ability. Her words are soft, her world-building spectacular. Many science-fiction books tend to be more on the clinical and cold side. But not this one. This one reads almost like a love song to a fabricated world that will have you questioning if, perhaps, it’s not so fabricated after all.

As with any new world, there is an expectation of new terminology or cultural cues. McGarry supports readers with a glossary, which is helpful, but when you are reading a digital book, it makes it slightly difficult to switch from the pages you are reading to the glossary to find your definition. It is the only detraction from reading this epic. If the terms were more organic, naturally appearing in the narrative, perhaps this piece would
have been easier to digest. The glossary is a good start, and still welcome when you are required to learn so much.

Overall, That Dark Edge stands out as an immersive and emotionally resonant journey through a masterfully created universe. Lovers of high-stakes action and explosions will not find what they are looking for here. McGarry’s dedication to her craft is evident in every page, making the story both memorable and thought-provoking. For readers seeking science fiction that balances imaginative world-building with genuine heart, this

And what is he willing to do to keep his brother safe? We meet Javier Jimenez, a young Mexican American who has his sights set on post-secondary. Along with Javier we meet his younger brother, Alex, who appears to be firmly facing the opposite direction as he falls in with an unsavory crowd. As if things are not already tense with brothers at odds, George Jones appears on the scene with a plan of his own: flip the entire neighbourhood as if it was as simple as flipping a house. Unfortunately for Javier, he’ll be pulled deeper than he intended to be.
Set against the backdrop of L.A., this book is a great introduction to the trilogy Hatch intends to write. We get a good understanding of the main players and how they play their parts. Grasping the teenage mindset, especially as a first-generation immigrant is not an easy task. Additionally, Hatch himself is white presenting so it’s curious to see how much he truly understands about the plights these brothers face. What Hatch does have in his corner, however, is first-hand experience teaching in L.A. himself, which has likely given him much exposure to the realities boys like Javier and Alex would face. It’s an excellent example of a writer utilizing their real-life experience and adapting it to the tale they wish to share. I would say Hatch has done a great job in this book.
The only difficulty with this book is the timing. This has nothing to do with Hatch, however with the unrest in L.A. due to current politics, this may be a hard read for some. That being said, if the reader can detach from their reality and allow themselves to be swallowed by the reality that Hatch crafts for them, perhaps it will be easier to read because the expectation in books is that the bad guys do not win. This is only the first in a trilogy, however, so I may be proven wrong. I’m actually excited to see the end result.
If you are looking for a coming-of-age story set in the heart of L.A. with strong family ties that are tested to their limits, Gone to Ground by Morgan Hatch is an excellent addition to your library. ...more

A person grows so much during this time and their personalities are shaped by those around them. Come along with Bella as she shares a story of her life in The Players: A Tale of Deception and Desire by Gail Marten. The first few chapters are Bella sharing how her life began and the journey she took to reach seventy years of age. You’d better not blink because so much information is shared in these few, fleeting chapters.

From chapter four onwards, the narrative shifts and it is no longer Bella’s story alone. We are introduced to a cast of colorful characters with vast and interesting backgrounds. It’s hard to go into detail in this review, as the book itself is short and I wouldn’t want to spoil the juicy bits for other readers. That said, Bella continues to be a part of the story, and we learn more about those around her, those she intersects with and those who connect with her. A mystery is afoot beginning with the 70th birthday party of Bella and her twin sister, Lena. Or perhaps the mystery began before that.

The book is short but engaging. The action does not stop, and the pieces are laid out for readers to follow. While the main protagonists of this tale are seventy years old, you can rest assured they get up to no good and don’t let their age stop you. It’s a refreshing take as often characters in tales such as this are much younger and perceived to have more energy and drive. Marten does well as she weaves her tale for readers to consume.

While perhaps there are some parts that seem a little unrealistic for a seventy-year-old to have actually engaged in, it doesn’t detract from the excitement itself. This book is delightfully enjoyable and hard to put down.

If you are looking for a not-so-typical mystery novel that is engaging to read, doesn’t take up hours of your time, and has wonderfully sassy older protagonists, you must pick up a copy of The Players: A Tale of Deception and Desire by Gail Marten.
