is 98% done with Savage Realms Monthly: Rubin, "The Blood Dagger of Dilgare": passably entertaining S&S-ish. Obviously a newer writer, so that's cool, with a decent story, some okay action. Better writing and editing would have helped. Author did have a great answer in the interview about having a striking opening paragraph.

Jim Kuenzli's review
of
Savage Realms Monthly: July 2025: A collection of dark fantasy sword and sorcery short adventure stories (Savage Realms Monthly Dark Fantasy Sword and Sorcery Adventure Magazine Book 37):
"This issue was a mixed bag. The third story by Richard Rubin was excellent. The first two stories seemed out of place for Savage Realms. They seemed more like Whetstone stories. Hopefully we’ll get some more like Rubin’s work next time."

"this is an issue toeing the edges of Sword & Sorcery. Lindberg's tale is by far the best, featuring an endearing and exciting 1st Person POV heroine and some terrific and horrific bloody danger and action. Definitely a dark fantasy thriller. Good int"

“Have you ever dreamt? At night, with your eyes closed?... Then you know that even with eyes closed, even in complete darkness, your mind can fill a frame for you, your soul, to observe and experience – a stage with color and atmosphere are as realistic as the visions you perceive while awake. This is how we Elders and the undead see, for we look at the world through an astral plane congruent with physical reality, where emotions are tangible shapes, and hopes, fears, and regrets collect themselves into transparent auras.”

“In one picture, the pool was half hidden by a fringe of mace- weeds, and the dead willow was leaning across it at a prone, despondent angle, as if mysteriously arrested in its fall towards the stagnant waters. Beyond, the alders seemed to strain away from the pool, exposing their knotted roots as if in eternal effort. In the other drawing, the pool formed the main portion of the foreground, with the skeleton tree looming drearily at one side. At the water's farther end, the cat-tails seemed to wave and whisper among themselves in a dying wind; and the steeply barring slope of pine at the meadow's terminus was indicated as a wall of gloomy green that closed in the picture, leaving only a pale of autumnal sky at the top. “The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents... some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the light into the peace and safety of a new Dark Age.”

“I have known many gods. He who denies them is as blind as he who trusts them too deeply. I seek not beyond death. It may be the blackness averred by the Nemedian skeptics, or Crom's realm of ice and cloud, or the snowy plains and vaulted halls of the Nordheimer's Valhalla. I know not, nor do I care. Let me live deep while I live; let me know the rich juices of red meat and stinging wine on my palate, the hot embrace of white arms, the mad exultation of battle when the blue blades flame and crimson, and I am content. Let teachers and philosophers brood over questions of reality and illusion. I know this: if life is illusion, then I am no less an illusion, and being thus, the illusion is real to me. I live, I burn with life, I love, I slay, and am content.”

“We cannot escape from our daily routine, because it will go with us wherever we go.... God must be sought and found in the things of our world. By regarding our daily duties as something performed for the honour and glory of God, we can convert what was hitherto soul-killing monotony, to a living worship of God in all our actions. Everyday life must become itself our prayer.”

Black Gate magazine recommends Helen's Daimones (link to review) "Too much of what’s called grimdark is little more than sex and gore splashed over a standard epic fantasy story. True horror — and at its heart, Helen’s Daimones is a horror story — unsettles, disorients, and makes you feel like the world will fall out from under your feet at any moment. Lindberg’s novel does all those things" Helen's Daimones
"Daimones" (working title) is a forthcoming Dyscrasia Fiction novella. Having completed the initial draft today (29K words) it is on track to publish this year (2016).

Spawn of Dyscrasia is now available as an audio book, narrated by Kathy Bell Denton who has a splendid voice reminiscent of the female narrator of Ralph Bakshi's 1977 movie Wizards (Susan Tyrrell). Kathy Denton has a creepy, English accent perfect for dark fairy tales and reinforces the character of Helen well.
