Naseha was born in a town encapsulated by two rivers, inhabited by people who celebrate on the face of natural calamities. It is a one-millennium old city, Cuttack which breathes of tales if only one can listen. Silent starry nights, noisy cracking dawn, lazy afternoon loaded with champak odor, giggling evening and early retreat of the day, all planted seeds of stories in her. Someone picking up the most hated character in Indian mythology needs guts. There the star rating goes to an instant 2.5. English is better than most of the contemporary novels written by Indian authors. Thankfully, the old school was followed which is what I prefer to half-baked Hinglish sentences. There were few grammatical errors, which could be due to typological or a mere slip of words, those could have been caught on the editing table. (I don't remember the page numbers, but there was one instance of a was missing, and in another instance, words were interchanged).
Almost every book has it! No big deal.

The subject was ancient, the style and presentation - contemporary, with two main characters narrating the story in simple 1st person format made it an easy read. Subtle sarcasm on society treading on the borders of frustration and dislike was not lost on the readers.

Coming to what could be better, the topic had an immense scope. Had it been split into 5 volumes covering the transition of a hot-headed young man to an Emperor, it could have covered few more exploits of Ravan. Would have loved to read more on author's version of Ravan's exploits like him capturing 9 planets, attack on Kailash, keeping Sita in Ashok Vatika was also supposed to be because Sita was barren till then and 1 year in Vatika among rare herbs made her fertile....I wanted more...That would be a compliment to the writer.

Last but not the least there were few logical gaps. For example: the reference to a child in reed basket could be Mosses (which was around the same time, I remember reference to pyramids) or could be Karan. But then Mahabharat was after Ramayan (as per popular belief, but scholars believe otherwise). Clarification could have helped erase confusion.
Surpnaka's breast and nose were mutilated after she was raped by Deva Prince, Laxman. Later, there were references to only ears and nose.

In the beginning of the book, there was a reference that the Asuras and Devas bloodlines were mixed some years ago, hence different skin tones. Then Asuras were always referred as dark skin. Though there might be a perfect explanation in writer's mind and something that might be very obvious to writer might not be so to the readers.

Still it was an interesting book, better than most of the novels these days.
