Jeeves and the Wedding Bells
Jeeves and the Wedding Bells by Sebastian FaulksMy rating: 3 of 5 stars
P.G. Wodehouse being my favourite author was always going to make this book rather a mixed bag for me. On the one hand, having seen Hugh Laurie's and Stephen Fry's excellent series Jeeves and Wooster, and armed with faces to go with my imagination, Laurie's bumbling reprisal and Fry's excellent "Indeed, sir", another Wooster novel would hit exactly right spots. On the other hand, to match the lyrical qualities of the Plum, in my opinion, is not a feat that anyone can easily emulate. Sebastian Faulks comes close though.
The plotting is not as intricate as Wodehouse's. There's only a couple of misunderstandings - not the typical fare for a Wooster novel. And while the story did flow, I think it was more the Hollywood-brain-washed with romcoms part of me that urged me to keep reading the book - the expectation of the big romantic payoff and the big kiss in front of hundreds of people spurring me on to the last pages of the book. The book did not disappoint in this regard, although as a perfect emulation of Wodehouse, it does perform sub-par. As an official fan-fiction, it is quite entertaining.

Paper & Ink

I know you are the paper to my ink,
When I cling onto you,
My form is real and true.
I hope I am the ink to your paper,
That without me,
You are plain and empty.

The Shadows Of My Life

I remember all those years ago
The big green leafy Gulmohar’s shadow,
We played for long hours under the tree:
Absolutely blissfully ignorant and carefree.
And then a lad of ‘teen, I discovered,
The new shadows of my life: One of ’em
The shadow of jealousy : of his good looks,
Her brains, his mobile, her lifestyle.
As a youth, about to face the
Real world I had a shadow of doubt –
Would I ….. could I make it?
Make my life my own? Alone?
But I needn’t have worried, for
Just like always, I had if I wanted,
The protective, supportive, motivating,
Shadow that my parents provided.
I remember, not so long ago, it seems
That I met another lovely shadow:
That of Love; and into its abyss I fell.
I fell into love and so matrimony.
Then, my children required of me,
The same shadow of support and security
That I received. And I gave them that
And more without thought.
And now I lie in bed, old and frail,
The final shadow of my life
Creeping up on me slowly – And so,
Tonight I meet the shadow of death.

Piku
[image error]It's shitty but really not!
The first thing that popped into my head as I left the theatre, quite content with the movie experience was that Piku was a sensible film. You can't say that about too many movies nowadays and it is high praise. After a godawful time at Avengers 2 (which in my opinion was just way too much randomness), Piku was an enema - flushing out all the shittiness that Avengers 2 had left inside and instead it made me feel quite fresh. (Pardon all the puns. There're going to be a lot)
Piku is a movie about the titular character played by Deepika Padukone who is leading a good, independent life with her cantankerous hyperchondriac constipated father. They decide to go on a road trip to Kolkata - passing through Banaras on the way. Both of these cities are really close to my heart now - and so the film won me over just with that. To be able to see Assi Ghat on screen and then Howrah Bridge - it was pleasantly nostalgic.
I would have liked to know more about Irrfan Khan's character but it's okay - the film is called Piku after all. And there's enough exposition on his character so as to not feel you dangling. The director Shoojit Sircar is to be commended for that. Too many films either focus way too much on inconsequential characters or sometimes not at all.
In my memory, this is the second Indian road-trip movie that I've seen (Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara being the first), and all I can say is that we need more road-trip movies.
Bottom line? The movie is worth it. There's family drama. It's hilarious. There's potty humour. It too is hilarious. There is just the hint of a love story that remains what it is, a sub-plot and doesn't devolve into a full fledged forced romantic pairing. That's what makes it a good movie, a sensible movie. Then again, the funniest moment moment of the movie was a guy pissing - so how sensible could it really be?

Chicas Hermosas

Forever Sound

Sleep comes not to mine eyes
Nor quietude to mine ears.
Wraiths of reverie but haunt
The heart to darkest fears.
Hands of mine seek thine as thirst unslaked
Yet find none but own in dire praye'
As unutter'd of baleful fate
And only leads wretched hope further astray.
For unreturned love does ever hound,
So is never to love, forever sound?
