The Seventh Victim. Photo credit: RCA

It’s spooky season again. I’ll be keeping this post brief. I’m reading and writing as always. I’ve got a few new pieces out in the world:

Let’s start with the most recent one. My Halloween story ‘Wolves at the Door’ was published by the good folks over at Dread Imaginings. I’m proud of this story. I wrote it (and two others) during my first two-week quarantine.

Steinbeck’s non-fiction voice is a delight and the relationship between him and Capa is the driving force of the book. This view of this Russia in this time paints such a specific picture, one told through the eyes of someone a little out of their de ...more

The Savage, Noble Death of Babs Dionne by Ron Currie Jr.

Though the ending is right there in the title, the impact isn’t lessened. Babs Dionne works best when it reckons with the injustice levied against certain groups, the violence of organized crime and religion. This isn’t a hardcore crime novel, though ...more

I don’t read a lot of Fantasy.

Nihilism and absurdity as lovers, together in a fascinating novel. It was a story that I had trouble putting down. The language is a joy and the themes slightly out of my reach (in a good way).

The Day of the Triffids by John Wyndham

While I love Wyndham’s style, Triffids felt like a couple different ideas jammed together. It’s still an effective book, but it doesn’t develop its characters or commentary in the way that he’s done in other novels.
