Stories in the Lonesome October

The Seventh Victim. Photo credit: RCA

It’s spooky season again. I’ll be keeping this post brief. I’m reading and writing as always. I’ve got a few new pieces out in the world:

Let’s start with the most recent one. My Halloween story ‘Wolves at the Door’ was published by the good folks over at Dread Imaginings. I’m proud of this story. I wrote it (and two others) during my first two-week quarantine.

I don’t read a lot of Fantasy.

Zelazny comes recommended highly from several writers I respect; I love how big of a swing this is. I can see the influence this series has on The Dark Tower, the intoxicating mixture of genre to create something truly f

Nihilism and absurdity as lovers, together in a fascinating novel. It was a story that I had trouble putting down. The language is a joy and the themes slightly out of my reach (in a good way).

The Day of the Triffids by John Wyndham

While I love Wyndham’s style, Triffids felt like a couple different ideas jammed together. It’s still an effective book, but it doesn’t develop its characters or commentary in the way that he’s done in other novels.

In Traps and Specters, Philip Fracassi leverages his genre experience to lead us further into the territories. While not every story succeeds, this collection is a still a showcase.

A collection written for a Radio broadcast, it has the feeling of a intricate campfire story. The stories are all set in The Hotel and loop back in and around each other, chilling and mysterious. A great collection.
