“Spotlight”, The Movie & Priests That Abuse

I recently watched the movie, “Spotlight.” The movie revealed the many years during which priests sexually abused children in Boston. Today, NPR announced that there was a list showing which priests in Seattle, Washington had abused children.

I was raised a Catholic and attended sixteen years of Catholic education. I went to St. Thomas More, and St. Mary’s Academy in Portland, Oregon and Fort Wrig

Susan Carr The Ballad of Desiree is indeed a ballad. The story romps from episode to episode, giving equal significance to strangers, lovers, friends and family. That is, until the birth of Coyote. Her enviable freedom has been disrupted. The reader wants to dislike Desiree for refusing to follow tradition, for refusing to let the responsibility of parenting interrupt her pursuit of her artistic dream. When she chooses, the reader is left hanging. She tells us she feels supported by her Coyote and his father, Ruby, but we doubt it. We want her to succeed, but we wonder: Is this allowed? Can we like her even if she remains true to herself despite all odds? Does she have the right to do this? Does she have the guts to just leave?
Yes and yes.
The redemption in The Ballad of Desiree is that Desiree and the author, Susan M. Carr, don’t care. This is what Desiree does. She chooses with integrity; she chooses for herself.
