Elwood Russell Johnston, Jr. (December 26, 1925 - January 24, 2010)

He was born in Philadelphia, PA, the son of E. Russell Johnston Sr. and Ethel (Doherty) Johnston. He received his B.S. from the University of Delaware and his M.S. and Sc.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He taught civil engineering at Lehigh University and Worcester Polytechnic Institute before coming to the University of Connecticut where he taught for twenty-six years, serving as head of the department of civil engineering from 1972 to 1977. He was the recipient of numerous awards from engineering societies over the years.
