Review: Acts of Treason (A Max Kenworth Suspense Thriller, Book 2) by Patrick Parker

Patrick Parker doesn't waste time easing readers in; he throws us straight into the chaos, and from that moment on, it’s a race against time.

Max Kenworth, the returning protagonist, is exactly the kind of hero you want in a geopolitical thriller: calm under pressure, deeply competent, and always two steps ahead (but never unrealistically so). This time, he’s on a mission to secure nuclear weapons in Turkey just as a coup erupts, and what follows is a globe-trotting pursuit of stolen nukes, shadowy enemies, and betrayal at the highest levels.

The layered plot weaves together multiple threats: a corrupt U.S. presidential campaign, a terrorist network, a traitor with a grudge, and a nation teetering on the edge of disaster. Parker handles these interwoven storylines with skill, keeping the pace brisk and the stakes high. What sets this book apart is how personal the conflict becomes, both for Max, as he finds himself the target of a setup, and for the traitor, whose vendetta adds emotional weight to the already tense action.

The political subplot involving Jenny Gareth and her morally bankrupt husband adds a sinister twist to the standard thriller formula. The idea of using a nuclear attack to manipulate a U.S. election is terrifyingly plausible in today’s climate, and Parker explores it with unnerving realism.

A nuclear power plant and terrorists…

What could go wrong with this combination? The mix sets up the potential for a catastrophe on US soil.

Jeff Bailey takes you through the inner workings of a nuclear power plant. All is well until the well-disciplined terrorists make the plant their target. The author shows the lengths a terrorist organization will go through to attack their target. Although the plant has numerous safeguards, make no mistake, the security can be subverted.

The highly trained, dedicated staff responsible for the safe operation of the plant made an early mistake of not recognizing an innocuous warning that an actual breach had occurred until events took a terrifying turn.

Jeff shows how they did it. Well done! This thriller is a worthy read for the suspense/thriller reader.
