ALEARDO ZANGHELLINI is Professor of Law & Social Theory at The University of Reading. Zanghellini's academic work sits at the confluence of law and the humanities— in particular, philosophy, history and literature. Much of it is concerned with how gender & sexuality bear on questions of political power and personal well-being. Zanghellini has published numerous academic articles, as well as three research monographs: Constitutional Innovation and Same-Sex Desire in D’Annunzio’s Fiume, 1919-20; Imaginative Resistance, Queer Fiction & the Law; and The Sexual Constitution of Political Authority. Aleardo Zanghellini is also the author of The Spellbinders, a novel retelling the story of Edward II, Piers Gaveston and Hugh Despenser.

Parisian Lives by Samuel M. Steward

Interesting reconstruction of pre-WW2 gay Paris, with enough name-dropping and details to make it feel authentic, though from a quick google search some of the details are incorrect (it seems Cocteau’s Orphee was a work of the 40s, so the narrator co ...more

This is a composite work, but the different components don’t sit easily together. I don’t know if there is a record of how the novel was created, but my feeling is that it came about in the form of a patchwork of mostly previously written material. I ...more

Lord Jim by Joseph Conrad

A subtle, superbly narrated psychological study — not just of the eponymous character. On its surface it is a 19th century tale of romance, honour, adventure, and Empire; but ante-litteram modernist undercurrents make it ripple throughout with self-d ...more
