Tomislav Ladan was a Croatian polymath. Linguist by training, he was also an essayist, a critic, translator and lexycographer. By the end of the 1961, when he started to work at the national Institute of Lexicography in Zagreb, he was using Greek, Latin, English, Russian, French, German, Swedish, Norwegian and Danish.
He directed the publishing of the Octolingual Encyclopaedic Dictionary and by the time of his death, seven out of eight planned volumes were done. He enriched Croatian literature so greatly by translations of many valuable works, etc. that a sentence said by one of his associates, Vlaho Bogišić, although it pertains to one area only, indeed is an illustrative one: "Throughout half a century Ladan has made the most extensive wor ...more
