One of my favorites is John le Carré’s memoir, The Pigeon Tunnel. It tells of his time in the British Foreign Intelligence Service during the Cold War, along with the research he conducted for his spy novels. It intrigues me to know how authors draw upon their own lives on the page. I have also enjoyed the works of James Patterson, John Grisham, and Mick Herron. Like le Carré, these three know how to tell a story.(less)

Yes, in one way or another. While in the foreign service, I spent many years in Washington, DC, which is the setting for all of my books. I try to capture both the grit and majesty of that city, along with the atmosphere of state offices. For instance, in my second novel, Head Shot, I write many scenes in the Secretary of State office and other diplomatic rooms. While in the service, I met many fascinating people from far-flung places. Some of them have stayed with me and inspired characters or incidents in my novels. (less)

This book was very propulsive. It's dialogue-driven with lots of action. I enjoyed the main character, as well. The book's tension comes both from the MC's relationships and from the external events. If you like the blend of personal and dramatic act ...more

“Washington DC is two cities. One, the city of grand monuments and museums, broad boulevards and majestic government buildings. The other, the city of crime and fear.”
Otho Eskin, Firetrap

“The psychopathic elderly twin brothers who own this company want to amass immeasurable wealth, and they think nothing of addicting those who use their product. Afterall, addiction ensures product growth. And, they are quite willing to kill anyone who threatens their success”
Otho Eskin, Firetrap

“In my experience, if I’m faced with a dangerous opponent who is threatening me, it makes sense to talk them down. I’ll offer him or her a deal. That’s far better than drawing a gun and shooting someone. Guns make negotiations impossible. Most people would rather talk than die.”
Otho Eskin, Firetrap
