The challenge of the 21st century author

For the new author in the age of SEO, metalinks, back links and all of the other social media based jargon - technology is both a blessing and a curse. During the research, writing and promotion of my first novel, I have learned much concerning the publishing process and found several universal truths. Tackling writing and marketing alone is a daunting task, even to the most resourceful and able human beings of stout heart. A successful book must follow 4 distinct stages, according to publishing guru Dan Poynter. 1) Creation 2) Publishing 3) Distribution 4) Promotion.

On amazon alone, several hundred thousand books are available. The numbers are staggering. How does the new author distinguish themselves from the crowd?
