Why use a capital D for Deaf in your book?

In Hidden Chapters one of the main characters , Bethan ,is Deaf. I have been asked why I use a capital D for Deaf throughout the book. To some people this may not seem important but for many Deaf people it is very important. I decided to use a captial D because Bethan identifies with the Deaf community . The community has it's own history, language and culture and by using the capital D I wanted to show my recognition of this.
