Dear Erin from South Carolina

I've never felt the need to personally comment on a bad review before. We don't all like the same things and I understand that. But this one....wow....

First of all, Erin from South Carolina, let me apologize to you for the few hours of your life you will never get back while you were reading The Secret to Hummingbird Cake. I am monumentally sorry. After all, you could've spent that time, I don't know....killing puppies or something.

Secondly, this book is based on a true story. It was written as a love letter from me to my very real, lifelong, best friend who you knew as "Laine." I only told the story the way it happened. Again, I apologize for the "lack of depth." But I assure you, it was pretty deep around here. Oh, I did leave out the part where she had a stroke during her illness and struggled to talk. Perhaps you can "entertain" your husband with that little nugget, as well. I didn't include that in the book because I was wanted desperately to give her a little happier ending that she received on earth.

Again, I apologize for the agony you experienced from the constant eye rolling. It must have been terrible.

Jennifer Meloni You go girl! I don't know why people have to be so mean. If you don't like it, say you don't like it, but don't be so hateful about it.

Emily Davidson Took me a while to find the review but I did. Yep, Jennifer is right. Just plain hateful. Making fun of people going through something like this, I don't understand it.

Celeste McHale Not all of us enjoy the same things. If someone doesn't like the book, I am perfectly alright with that. But this whole reading it to the husband thing so he could make fun of it too, felt like an attack on her suffering and on our pain. And I didn't like it.

Kathryn I went back and found Erin's review. If I read something I hate, one, I'll usually DNF it, but if I finish it, I won't totally trash it or at least, I hope I don't . and two, I'll try to mention something positive about the book. Also, I'll usually mention how we all like different things and how the book may not have been read at the right time. This book wa\\isn't going to end up on my top 10 of the year, but I did give it 3 stars and actually considered it a 3.5-star read.

Sandysbookaday (taking a step back for a while) 'Lack of Depth'? Are you sure she was reading YOUR book? She could have put it down and walked away at any time, but she chose not to.

You shredded my heart in The Secret to Hummingbird Cake. I hope there is another book in the pipeline. Love your writing. 💖📚

Only one thing would have made this book better (It was already excellent) - the recipe for Hummingbird Cake!😉😋
