My Thoughts
PRAISE:
So I read this book without looking at the Goodreads ratings and I am glad. This seems like a really misunderstood book. I kind of get why as it doesn’t really follow any real formula. It is in the psychological thriller and world literature genres but doesn’t play by any rules. And that’s why I personally loved it. However, if you are looking for something reliable, something “typical,” this is not for you. I see this book being more loved by younger readers and fans of gritty autobiography. If you are fans of memoirs dealing with depression, addictions, or anything darkly psychological, then this might be for you. If you are a little bit on the strange side then this is for you as well. Slights touch on an array of subjects, everything from loneliness, family drama, social isolation, psychological trauma, death, and afterlife. It is a crazy, honest, and brutal ride. And quite an interesting one once you get in and you get adapted the author’s cut and dry writing style.
You Must be Patient With This one:
It does take a while to build up to any “real events” and left me scratching my head but for some reason, it also made me hungry for more. This book is a big tease. You have to really have patience with this one. I enjoyed the weird MC and found myself eager to see what she was going to do next.
It is a thick book, I mean there are 528 pages, but I breezed through this book finding the journey pleasant. What I loved most about this book was its lack of formula. It made the read much more realistic and thus, frightful. It showed me something about the world that I didn’t want to think of and made me long to be Stevie’s friend as it seemed that was all she needed. A friend.
Totally Original
It is written in the first person and boy, Stevie’s narrative is raw and totally different from our usual good girl MCs. It is like reading her diary. Or being her best friend and her regaling you every juicy detail of her life. But this book goes broader. It’s not just a story about a young lady’s development into womanhood and her isolation on societies fringes, it’s a story about the greater population and the grim nuggets of life. The what-ifs? It most certainly left me hungry for more. Sadness gripped me personally upon reading the last page as I just didn’t want the madness to end. Make sure you can handle your books like you can handle your liquor though. This one isn’t for lightweights.
Potential flaws:
The character is a bit too unrelatable and negative so I can see where people would feel a distance to this story. Also, the book could have been shortened.
In conclusion, this book raised a lot of questions in my mind about the blurred lines between sanity and insanity, justice and injustice. And be careful who you Slight. Absolutely brilliant IMO.
5/5 coffee stars.
Let’s Be Real
Kaaron Warren is simply one of my favorite authors. She is hands-down one of the reasons I chose to write fearlessly, brutally, and honestly. I found this story a few years ago in the library looking for something unique, dark, and my favorite word “honest.” When I read Slights it was like reading a memoir of a very deranged girl, which I can find very relatable (wink wink). It is thick with meaning much more than just the story you have at hand. It is about family, life, trust, and the unsightly little demons hidden in our subconscious minds. If you are one to want to always keep a rose-colored glasses on, then maybe this book isn’t for you, but if you are hardcore at heart and dare to get uncomfortably close to a killer, and enter her edgy, jagged mind, then definitely read this
