Jami Rambles #1
*I do not own this photo and I do not claim to own this photo* Multitasking is hard. I know this because I’ve been trying
to master the skill my entire life. I’m only thirty, but I’d say that’s quite a
long time not to have the skill down. I’m also a woman and if I’m honest, isn’t
that in our DNA. A little bit of this, a bit of that, and a splash of
multitasking. From what I can see, someone missed that last part when they made
me.
I say this because I’m a writer I write romance and lately
I’ve been finding it harder and harder to write something down. Anything. Even
this. I’m writing this, and it’s the most natural thing I’ve written in a
while. Months. Wait … I did write earlier today. I wrote a whole whopping 1500
words. Then, the spark ran out. I got up from my computer, which is currently
at the islands in my kitchen (I’m trying this whole maybe if I write in
different places it’ll come back to me theory) and I begin to pick up the
house, vacuum some dog hair off the couch, put laundry away … you get.
Somewhere in the midst of procrastinating, I remembered that
earlier today, I’d read a post in this group I’m a member of on Facebook. It’s
for writers, and someone asked if people work on more than one book at a time,
or if they focus on one entirely before moving on. Now, my first thought was
“One. Definity only one” but then I started to read the comments, and one
caught my eye. This author mentioned that she’d have multiple WIPs open and
she’d write in one and then when she got stuck or lost; she’d start in another,
and so on. As long as she was writing, she didn’t worry over what book it was
in.
GENIUS.
So I tried it. I sat back down at my computer and opened
another WIP. I read a page or two and then opened another. Guess what? I now
have 4 WIPs open, and I’m typing this here blog. So, all in all, I think she
was onto something. I may not be writing in a book at this moment, but I’m
writing, and I’m working to re-familiarize myself with writing every night
again. Tonight is night one of this new idea. Let’s see how It goes. I’m
calling this evening a win because any night I make time for my writing is a
step closer to my next goal.
That’s the end of my current ramble. I might post more posts
like this, and I might not.
P.S. Although she wasn’t the author in the group I mentioned
above. Krista, keep up the blog posts and thanks for the inspiration!
P.S.S. Tonight I learned that 6000-ish words are my sweet spot before I start a new book.
