Rainy Day Reads

Dark clouds...Rainfall...Cooler Temperatures...

It all combines to make for a day meant to be spent reading a good book from beginning to end. Actually this is my favorite way to spend any day, whether warm or cold, sunny or rainy.

There's something about becoming lost in the lives of new characters and the twists and turns of a good story. I love every rise and dip of the emotional rollercoaster, and when I close the back cover on a good book, I feel a mixture of satisfaction and loss - but never regret!

I write romance stories, specifically romantic suspense, so this is my go-to genre to read typically. However, my taste in books (and movies and music) is more eclectic. If it's a good book, I'll give it a read. Most of the time, if I read outside of my go-to genre, it's because the book was recommended.

For instance, my best friend recently recommended a mystery series that had enough of a touch of romance that I would be intrigued. The Eva Rae Thomas series is by Willow Rose, a great mystery writer who has a variety of series available if you're interested. I haven't read the entire Eva Rae series, but I will. There were some unexpected twists, and I'll admit one or two of them had me yelling at the characters, outraged, as if that would change the course of the story. There was action and romance. But what I liked the best were the characters. They were imperfect with real world problems and real world uncertainty in how to handle those problems. Their flaws were relatable and made them endearing, even if they did make choices that left me shaking my head. I've since downloaded a few books by this author that I look forward to reading as time allows.

Paranormal and fantasy are genres I don't usually read, but again, I had a friend who recommended a series by K.M. Shea. The Fairytale Enchantress Series was the one that got me hooked, but then I had to read some of the Entwined Tales because they were closely related. There's more to come in this series, and I'm impatiently waiting for the rest. Because this series has it all - memorable characters, action and adventure, good vs. evil, romance, a strong and fierce heroine, and a fairytale land that takes you out of your everyday life.

Colleen Baxter's Crossover Series is one I honestly didn't expect to like, much less love. But after the first book, I was sucked in. I had to know what happened to the characters, what new experiences they faced, and what unexpected twist would inevitable come, forcing me to read just one more chapter...and then one more...and then...well, you get the idea. By the time I finished the series, I felt like the characters were old friends.

Other authors in the romance genre that I have read and reread their stories include Nora Roberts, Maryann Jordan, Susan Stoker and Julie Johnstone.

If you have recommendations for books or authors you enjoy, feel free to share those. I'm always looking for a great rainy day read.
