For the kind attention of the Oracle!

The Oracle has spoken: ‘A big Ram temple must be built in Ayodhya. The Government can bring an Ordinance in this regard.’

In this context, a story by the Tamil poet  Sekilar (10th century CE) called,’Poosalaar puranam’ may be appropriate.

There was a king called Kadavarkone in one  of the princely states in around Kanchipuram. The king wanted to build a huge temple for Siva. He wanted to perpetuate his own  name in history.

He discussed this with the.  courtiers and royal priests.  He instructed his architects that it should be of such a grandeur that the like of it had not been seen  before. The engineers and the labour force toiled and night to raise the temple. The king after consulting the royal astrologers, fixed the date for the inauguration ceremony

The previous night before the ceremony , God Siva appaered in the king’s dream and told him ‘I am sorry, I cannot be present tomorrow for your function, as I am committed to be present  in another temple inauguration ceremony.’

“Where, my Lord?’ asked the king.

‘ At Thiruninravoor,’ said Siva.

The king was shocked. ‘ Thiruninrevoor is a small hamlet and who could be constructing a temple to beat mine?’ he said to himself.

Next day he summoned all his courtiers and priests and went in search of the small village. No one in that small village was aware of such a mighty construction.  The king and his parivar stood dumbfounded! ‘Why should Lord Siva mislead me like this? ‘ the king said to himself.

At that time, the king saw an old poor man with a huge mud vessel full of water on his left shoulder coming towards them. He was shocked to see the king with all his courtiers. He put down the mud pot and saluted the king.

‘Who are you? ‘ asked the king.

‘ I have constructed the temple for Lord Siva and today is ‘Kumbhabishekam'(Inauguration).I am carrying water to give my Lord His sacred bath’.

‘Where is the temple?  asked the king.

‘ In my mind, Your Majesty. For the last one year I have been planning and constructing it stone by stone and look at me, my lord, the temple stands tall reaching the heavens!’
