Dear Readers,
Some of you know me from my previous novels – A Golden Age, The Good Muslim, and The Bones of Grace. The novels followed the journeys of three generations of Bangladeshi women from the Haque family. My immense gratitude to all those of you who read those books with care and love.
For the last ten years, I’ve been working at a tech startup founded by my husband. At some point in those years, I decided to write a novel about startups, and specifically what it might be like to be a female, POC founder of a tech company. What obstacles might this person face? How would she overcome them? And what might happen to her marriage in the meantime?
It’s always difficult to change lanes midway through one’s career, but I greatly enjoyed writing this novel because it encompasses some of the urgent moral questions that have been on my mind – work/life balance, the divisions of labor within a family, and whether our tired old patriarchal tropes will ever be fully dismantled. But mostly, the writing of this book gave me joy because I’ve been saving all of my best jokes for this one – so I hope, that in addition to making you think and feel along with Asha, it might also make you laugh. Thank you for coming with me on this new journey, friends.
