Chapter Six: For Sale? (Literally)

Lionel was quiet, too. That was really out of character for my baby brother. He was into the music one second, then he would look back at us, but after I gave him a 'what you looking at' glance, he would make a face like he wanted to say something. He suddenly turned back in his seat and touched Mandisa asking, "Yo, Mandisa?"
"Oui, Lionel?" She replied as the wind blew through her hair. She let the window up, nearly closing it.
"Why did you try to kill yourself?" Lionel asked her, and she peered back out the window, remaining quiet.
"Nigga! Where did you hear some fucked up shit like that?!" I yelled at him about to cock back my fist and slug him in the shoulder. Mandisa looked at me suddenly and frowned. I put my hand down.
"Mami told me! She said that Mandisa has hurt herself before," Lionel explained, frowning at me scrutinizing closely.
"It is very complicated, Lionel. You would not understand," She finally answered with a sigh, still looking out the window.
"Try me!" I growled, watching my brother's face. Cyrus looked at me in the rearview mirror and peered back at the road. Mandisa exhaled and nervously looked at her long fingernails.

Lionel was pissed off! He looked back at me and gave me a glance, and I nodded, telling him that I knew what he was thinking. But running away wouldn't work. Not for this moment! She'd miss her mother, her baby sister, and we would probably end up bringing her back in worse condition than she was.
If she was suicidal, that means that if we can't save her, it won't be long after she's taken away before hurting herself. She's tried before, but once she feels completely hopeless, she's going to try again until she succeeds or gives up. I couldn't believe that her father was so evil. He was crazy! I thought slavery was dead?! Sex trafficking is illegal here, but I don't know about other countries.
