Mounds, mounds, mounds

The giant earth pyramid at the heart of the Cahokia site is not unique. It is the biggest, but it is one of thousands of earthworks created by Native American cultures. This is a map of mounds known by the late 1800s, from the Smithsonian's Bureau of Ethnology, where every red dot is a mound – and of course, many more have been discovered over the century since.
