Lipstick on a Pig is a relatable and inspirational memoir by Rebecca Butt about growing up in a tough societal and familial environment deprived of basic human emotion and care, but with a strong will for self-preservation and hope for a better future. Rebecca, or Becky, constantly moves around from place to place with her disconnected and angry mother and her two siblings, Ethan and Diana. All of them, growing up with an absent father and with no real connection to their mother, have to face the dangers of living without parental guidance everywhere they move. Sticking together rather than growing apart, Becky, who slowly but surely develops an eating disorder that will plague her life for a long time, and her siblings go through a lot of tough changes, bad crowds, and supernatural experiences with demons that pester them in almost every house they move to. The inability to cope with this kind of life pushed Becky over the edge, an experience that changed her mindset, which allowed her to see the light at the end of the tunnel and retrieve the hope for a better life that she almost lost.

Rebecca Butt's eloquent style of writing and vivid descriptions of characters' emotional states and overall life situations living in harsh conditions opens up about her childhood with her mother and two siblings, deprived of parental guidance, acceptance, support, and love. It is a real, emotional, and heart-breaking journey through life, filled with self-doubt and feelings of abandonment, followed by the descent into eating disorders, eerie supernatural experiences that blur the lines of reality, and a delinquent way of growing up. Everyone should read Lipstick on a Pig at some point in their lives, as the story as a whole will leave readers with much more appreciation of life, family, the people that surround them, and most importantly, themselves.

The humoristic approach to tough situations in Rebecca Butt's wonderful writing rounds up all the emotions in one very inspirational and, above all, human occurrence.
