"The roads were deserted."

On a snowy January 29, 1814, somewhere on the road between Portsmouth and London . . . the story of my first novel, An Independent Heart, begins. Follow the sequence of real and imagined events in a calendric side-by-side read of my novel and my blog, and discover the personages and paintings, poetry and music, gardens and grand estates, food and fashions, mores and manners of the period!

Christina Morland Beautiful start! (I've only read Chapter One, but I've purchased it, so I look forward to reading more when I can!)

Elizabeth Grant Thank you, Christina, how kind! Hope you enjoy the story!

The first chapter in a first novel, you can imagine how I agonized about it. I even made a change before the second edition came out. In the first edition, the story starts ten days earlier than it does now. (Shucks, I wanted to post the link here, but apparently it's not allowed. I'll paste it in at the end of Chapter 1 here in my Goodreads blog). I was sorry to let General Murray go, but my editor said he was one character too many, alas.

Christina Morland Ah, cutting characters -- or anything at all -- is such a difficult process for me! So, congrats to you for going through the hard and difficult work of making those changes!
