Getting back on the horse...

The Ivory MaskI remember being told (years ago) that when you fall off your horse, unless you're really badly hurt, you need to get right back on, or you'll be too afraid to ride again.

Well, except for the two times I was really badly hurt in riding accidents, I mostly did get right back on; and even as an old lady (I'm 67), I'm still riding.

It's been about 20 years since I fell off the publishing "horse." I had a couple of really difficult experiences: one publisher went bankrupt and reneged on my outstanding contracts (this explains though doesn't excuse why all of you who've been waiting for the 3rd Bharaghalfi book have been waiting SO LONG), and though I tried to find another publisher to pick up the series, I was unsuccessful. They also dropped the sequel to Cats in Cyberspace (which was already written). I did find a publisher for that, a house that had specialized in non-fiction and was hoping to expand into fiction. It did not go well, and I did not continue with them. (The sequel, which was published under the title PKP For President, is still available as an e-book. It's the book that you sometimes see listed in "upcoming" notices as Prey-Part Politics, which was the title the failed publisher was planning to use.)

After those experiences, I didn't really have the heart to deal with the publishing world -- which was changing faster than I could keep up. There were also a bunch of Life Things that got in the way, so my writing career stalled out. After a few years, I began The Ivory Mask, which I worked on in fits and starts. But Life Things kept getting in the way, and I didn't see a real reason to push them out of the way and get back to writing.

Until recently. I finally decided that I could take advantage of the changes in the publishing world to try the indie-book route. So I finished Ivory Mask, and am hard at work (and having a GREAT time) on the 3rd Bharaghlafi book: An Ambush of Tigers.

So... I guess what I've done is to get back on a different horse: not the "traditional publisher" horse; the indie-book horse. I hope you'll read The Ivory Mask -- and let me know what you think!
