Author Interview: H.S. Kylian

My friend, H.S. Kylian just released a new book, Sunflowers Under the Harvest Moon. To celebrate her new release, I had the opportunity to interview her about her writing and her book!

Hi, Hannah! Thank you so much for joining us! Can you introduce yourself to my readers?

Of course! *clears throat* Hello, folks! I’m H.S. Kylian, otherwise known as Hannah. I’m from the PNW, born and raised, and am the oldest of eight. I also have two adorable nephews! I’ve been writing since I was a child, and am more often than not imagining my stories instead of writing them…

You just released a brand new book, Sunflowers Under the Harvest Moon. Congratulations! Can you tell me what inspired this story?

Ah…well…let’s go back in time to 2018. I was going down the unsolved mysteries rabbit hole as you do, and came across an urban legend from Switzerland known as Le Loyon. Well, initially, the idea that sprung from that entailed a widow with a young daughter coming to Marigold Hills for vacation and stepping into a mystery. It would’ve also included her falling in love with Jonathan, who has pretty much stayed the same, albeit with a few changes here and there. Then as the years passed, it morphed into this.

From the title, this story seems to have a very autumny feel. Is that what readers can expect? Do you have any cute fall scenes from this story you could tell us about?

In the last third of the book, yes. The story begins in spring and ends in the fall, with a wintery epilogue. However, the title mainly refers to a certain scene that’s actually in the late summer. As far as cute fall scenes go…I’m not sure I should spoil it.

Were any characters in this book based on anyone you know? If so, can you share a little about that?

Hmm…to be honest, I’ve always thought I put a little bit of my parents into the couples I write, since they were my first example of what a Godly marriage should look like. Although right now the one thing I keep thinking of is my dad always kissing my mom when coming home from work, always calling her beautiful…

How did this story pose different challenges to write than previous books you’ve written?

Well, considering this is my first full length novel, and I’ve been writing Jonathan & Nicki over and over again for the past seven years, which includes having already published two short stories about them, it was only really a challenge to finish it. It just kept growing!

What did you learn from writing this book?

I suppose the usual that any writer learns: just keep writing even if it’s cringe at the moment; you can fix it later. Or even as you go if it works for you that way. Either way, diligence pays off in the end.

Why should my readers take the time to read this book?

Well, if you like sweet romance with a Biblical worldview and themes of hope and healing in the continuing navigation of loss, you might like Sunflowers Under The Harvest Moon

Do I need to read any of your other works before I read this book, or can it be read by itself?

Since it’s part of a series that’s in progress, it does kind of need to be read after Handprints and For Better or For Worse, but at the same time it can be read without them since those are about Jonathan’s parents.

Where can I find this book to purchase?

Amazon. It’s available in eBook, paperback, and thru KU.

When can we expect more books from you?

Wellll…I have another Jonathan & Nicki short story coming out in December called Together With You, but as far as novels go, I’m not sure. I want the next one to be about Jonathan’s parents but we’ll see.

Thank you so much for joining us!!!
