The Sun and the Moon – The new novel by R D Rivers
My guest today is Canadian science fiction and fantasy author R D Rivers, who’s here to tell us about her latest novel, The Sun and the Moon.
So, tell us what the latest novel’s all about?
The Sun & The Moon is set in the same universe as my previous title, Blood Ties, but is a standalone that takes place in a different county. It has two protagonists, Sorin and Elaine. Elaine is a dhampir, her mother is a vampire her father is human, she does contract work for the country’s government as a sort of liaison between the vampires and humans. Sorin is human who works in a small bookkeeping firm. Through a series of events they meet and Elaine discovers, unbeknownst to Sorin, that he is as the sun is to vampires. Deadly. The head of one of the vampire corporations has decided to become Prime Minister so they team up to stop her.
So, was the inspiration for the books?
I don’t know if I have an inspiration as such. I’m an avid reader, gamer, and watch a lot of tv and movies so I’m sure there’s some ideas from there, but I couldn’t say for sure for this title. For the previous book, there was a bit of influence from some of the games I was playing. I write more as a hobby. When I retired, a lot of people would ask, “What are you going to do?” Writing seemed a natural thing since I worked in the publishing industry for a number of years and was big into the convention scene.
Are there other novels in the series?
I don’t really consider them a series, but all my stories take place in the same universe and have the same MacGuffin. I call the main protagonists ‘Blips’. They come from a different world through various means and end up trying to fit into this one. They all have something small that makes them other. For example, in The Sun & The Moon, Sorin is the sun to vampires. In Blood Ties, there was someone who plunked at the piano in her own world, but wasn’t very good, but became a world class musician in this one. That kind of stuff. Small enough to not be useful to most people but still pretty cool. All my stories have that as the main premise.
Are you active in the local writing community?
No. I used to be big into the Sci fi and Fantasy convention scene. I worked behind the scenes in a number of local ones, including Westercon and World Fantasy when they came to Calgary. I was also one of the founding committee members of When Words Collide but have long since backed away from that.
When do you write?
I’m a morning person. I work best first thing in the morning. I’m usually at my desk at 6:30 a.m. By lunch, I’m ready to move on to non-writing stuff like gaming and reading and other such stuff.
What are you working on now?
I have two titles on the go right now. Again, both are in the same universe as the other two. They are different enough I can work or them concurrently and not mix the stories up. I’m not going to say too much about them just yet as they are still in pretty early stages. I’m still a little bit in the headspace of The Sun & The Moon as it’s only just coming out November 26.
How can people see what you’re up to?
You can follow me on Instagram @rdriverswriter. Ninety percent of my posts are of my cat, although, right now, I’m mostly promoting my new book.
Starting December 1st there will be a Goodreads giveaway of The Sun & The Moon. Unfortunately, with the way Goodreads works, it will be for US readers only.
The Sun & The Moon releases November 26, 2025 in both print and ebook. It’s available pretty much wherever you purchase books (Amazon, Kobo, Barnes & Noble etc) and you can even ask your local bookstore to order you a copy).
