It seems to me that what I wrote in my first piece about the Kinks Waterloo Sunset, in the UK Only series, was not adequate to do the song justice. There are even more doubles and triples here than there are in Lola; moreover, there is an affective resonance to these lyrics that is not in Lola, and raises this song up above Lola and Ray Davies other great songs. Just the opening verse can take an attentive listener in a bunch of different directions:
