Always advertise (issue #2) !

So, week two is here and I'll just get straight down too it :)!

The News!
Well, the news this week is that I held a small Kindle sale by means of an experiment/shameless cash-in on Black Friday. I chose not to promote it because I wanted to see what happened if one did not. Also, I felt that I had probably given enough away free for now (it's not like I'm chaging the earth for it lol!)and so I proceeded with my experiment. Well, it resulted in backing up the conceived wisdom that one needs to promote. It ultimately was not a difficult equation to balance. When I advertised I sold 112 but when I didn't I sold...14! So, there it is folks, if you don't advertise a giveaway the sales don't happen.

Also this week I got my first bad review :(. I always knew this day would come, so in some ways I'm glad it is done and over with but it still hurts. It's a very weird sensation. One always tells oneself that it will be fine, one is harder than this, one does not live on a self-deluded cloud of marshmallow. But then it happens and it feels like somebody kicked you in the gut. It's not even a logical thing like "Oh blast, now I have my book rated at three stars on U.K. Amazon, just what I didn't need!", it is a purely emotional response. Still, one has to keep the faith, listen to the criticism, take it on the chin like a man and get on with writing :)! And on that irritatingly bracing note I shall proceed to

The Video!
O.K. this week comes with a swearing warning. A big one. Even to tell you the name of the video would involve swearing so I'm just going to tell you roughly what it entails and post a link lol. It is an attack on the "I don't care because I'm too real" attitude of many rappers and, whilest being screamingly funny in the sheer stupidity of the rapper's assertions (Canadian comedian Jon Lajoie) it is also a pretty good song in its own right. Check it out, unless you are allergic to swears, in which case swiftly move on, fast.

Something Cool 8)! T
This week is a car I have just fallen for - the Ferrari 458! Top Gear found the handling superb, which compliments it's top speed of 202 mph and acceleration of 0-60 mph in 3.3 seconds perfectly. Also, just look at it! It is so beautiful. Normally I really am not excited by Ferraris, I normally find them uninspired, dull and just so "oh yeah, that's a fast car" but this is wonderful. It's rounded, sleek and those wingy things at the front are just the icing on the cake.

My Reading!
O.K. this week I finished reading this book.
The Roman Army The Greatest War Machine of the Ancient World by Chris McNab
Well, I say finished but in truth I only read the chapter on the Early Imperial army, which is my main area of interest. It was good and basic but that was as far as it went. This is infuriating. I don't know why one can't have all one needs in one book! Take Greece and Rome at War.
Greece and Rome at War by Peter Connolly .
This book was terrific at explaining the depth and detail of most things but failed to cover some of the basics, such as the fact that most auxiliary cavalrymen carried a spear! I mean, in this case the two books compliment each other perfectly but what if there was not an accidental companion? What if a book was simply insufficient? Well, I guess one just has to keep looking, as I did after getting Warfare in Ancient Greece.
Warfare In Ancient Greece Arms And Armour From The Heroes Of Homer To Alexander The Great by Tim Everson
Eventually I found Greece and Rome at War and again they filled in for each other's shortcomings but it was a real pain not having answers to questions I really wanted to know the answer to.

The Shout Out!
I just wanted to give a quick shout out for Scott, a member of my Writer's Network group, for his giveaway on the 29/30th of November! It's a YA fantasy piece and if that sounds like your sort of thing then please check out the link!
