How Amazon Fills Orders for Print Copies of The Unwritten Law
For those who are interested in purchasing print copies of my book, The Unwritten Law, I wanted to explain how the books are printed. Createspace.com, a division of Amazon.com, prints each book as the order comes in from Amazon. As a result, authors no longer have to personally purchase a stack of their own books for mailing out to customers (however, if the author does a book signing, he or she has to order copies of their own book and pay the shipping to receive copies to sell at their book signing events).
Amazon does a great job shipping their books (customers pay $3.99 to have any book shipped from them, but as those of you who are regular Amazon customers know, orders over $25 are shipped free).
When I ordered the ISBN numbers for my book ($250 for 10 numbers, with a different number required for each different edition) and the Library of Congress control number, I had to order print copies of my book, pay shipping from Amazon, and then pay about $6.00 each (for postage and a mailer) to ship the required copy to Bowker (who sold me the ISBN numbers) and to the Library of Congress.
This is a major improvement from the days when authors paid thousands of dollars to have books printed, but the cost of paying shipping twice is why I chose to not ship promo copies to countries outside of the US and Canada on the Goodreads site.
Perhaps I will be able to expand the promos overseas if The Unwritten Law becomes a best seller (with the help of my Facebook friends and family)!
