SILENCE FALLS by JC Stephenson

As silence falls across the field,
As shells fell yesterday,
I see the dead around me,
I see those who will stay.

And although I leave my battlefield,
My life and limbs are whole,
I leave behind much more than that,
I leave behind my soul.

I've been here many times before,
And I'll be here again,
My uniform and cause will change,
But never will my pain.

So, remember those who fell before,
Lost from life and cause,
And take a moment to stand and think,
A momentary pause.
