Adele Wearing’s Top 5 Reads of 2013

Our guest today is the ever awesome Adele Wearing. Bonding over our mutual love of the gloriously confusing ™ ‘The Office of Lost and Found’, Adele has become a supportive presence online and my favourite drunk person at Harrogate Crime Festival. She’s also one of the brains behind Fox Spirit Books, a brilliant independent publisher, who everyone should check out. Here, she picks her top 5 reads of 2013…

Top 5 Reads of 2013 by Adele Wearing

Five books that stood out this year? That’s hard, largely because most of what I’ve read this year has been submissions for Fox Spirit and so the books I’ve read for pleasure have all been a bit exceptional and many of them by friends, including some of these. So I’ve pulled out five of the years reads that I have pushed on other people already, since that seems an easy way to choose.

In no particular order then five that I think everyone should take the time to check out from 2013.

Rebellion by Lou Morgan

This is the kind of urban fantasy I love which you’d expect because Lou has said herself I am the target audience. The battle between heaven and hell fought on our streets, smart mouth angels, asshole demons, actually some asshole angels too, and a heroine who is figuring it out as she goes.

Throne of the Crescent Moon by Saladin Ahmed

So often the hero of a fantasy novel is young, handsome, fit. In this we have a slightly fat old man who loves his books. It was different, entertaining and a joy to stumble across this treat of a book. Well worth a look if you are looking for a change.

The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of her own Making by Catherynne Valente

A joyful, youthful romp of a fairytale. I loved the lightness of this and the fact that it was somewhat different than I expected. It’s tremendous fun. I set it as my last book group choice. Great for all ages.

Natural Causes by James Oswald

A little crime in the mix. With a touch of the supernatural this is mainly an investigative crime novel, delightfully dark and a great read. Get stuck into a bit of murder with Inspector McClean.

Poison by Sarah Pinborough

An adult twist and modern values on the old Snow White tale, dark, witty and unexpected. This went on the ‘must have the rest’ pile as soon as I finished it.
