The End of Eternity by Isaac Asimov

Imagine the world governed by a community of immortals called Eternals who can see way back to when it all began as well as centuries forward in the future.
Imagine these Eternals with the power to introduce minor changes in reality as we know it altering it to what they believe is a risk-free better world - thereby creating thousands of other potential realities though only one can exist in physical time while the others wait in the shadows, wait as they may or may not be called into existence.
Imagine one Eternal falling in love, effectively changing his perceptions of what till then was the absolute truth of eternity.
Asimov as usual proves why he is a grand master of all things science fiction and also one of the best story tellers that ever was or will be.
A must-read.
