The Recovery of Catherine Brodie Excerpt

Erin stood with the toes of her black brogues touching the metal strip that separated the corridor and the cellar. She was in the basement of Green’s, the sunlight filled the cellar room. Keeping her feet where they were, she stretched out her hand to search for the light switch to her left. The florescent lights buzzed as they took three tries to come to life. Pushing the metal door wide open, she let it bang against the wall. Glancing left and right as if she were crossing a road she poked her head into the room, supporting her body with her hands on the doorframe. Dozens of beer, cider and lager barrels were hooked up to piping that threaded up and through holes in the ceiling. A section to the right had floor to ceiling caging, the door locked with a padlock. In there were two bottles of every spirit Green’s sold on display with several boxes scattered on the floor. Erin clutched the bunch of keys in her hand, squeezing hard. Lifting one foot off the ground, she tentatively moved it over the threshold. Erin had been plucking up the courage to step back into the cellar for four years. A hand shoved her in the middle of her back from behind before her foot touched the floor. The hard shove caused her to trip and hop into the room. While her back was to the door, she heard it slam shut.

“At last, I have you alone, I’ve missed kissing those lips,” Patrick spoke quietly and slowly.

Erin froze where she had come to a stop. Her knees had met a metal beer barrel. She held onto the wooden supporting beam to her right to regain her composure. Patrick’s footsteps came nearer until they stopped directly behind her. She didn’t have the courage to turn around.

“Get out Patrick, you’ll never kiss me again.” Erin gritted her teeth as she spat out the words. A hand touched her shoulder and she whirled around to face Patrick. He wrapped his arms around her back and kissed her with his open mouth but Erin froze once more. The kiss didn’t last long, a few moments went by and then Erin heard a yelp that she didn’t make and she was free of Patrick’s embrace.
