Shine your light so others can too

Sometimes we’re afraid of being the best version of ourselves. We fear that if we shine to brightly, if we do our best, we’ll face criticism or perhaps even ridicule. But by allowing our light to shine, we give others the opportunity to do the same.

What is life all about? Is it about learning? Is it about loving? Or is it about something else? I think life is about experience and gaining as much experience as we can on and through different aspects of life. There are no limitations as to what we can learn, as long as we enable ourselves to keep having new experiences.

Some experiences will be great, wonderful even, whilst others may be not so pleasant. By changing our perspectives towards the less pleasant experiences we shall always have something to gain. There’s pretty much a lesson in everything and by looking at challenges in this way, our experience of those lessons will always be to our advantage.

The light we carry, is a light which exudes our purpose. Everyone has a light, but everyone’s light is different. For some, their light could be to go into the world in the form of business and create opportunities for many. For others it could be to teach or to create – a designer, artist, writer. When we allow our light to shine, there are always people who will benefit. It could be one person but it could also be more. Quality isn’t found in numbers and making a difference only needs to start with one person however, the influence or effect could eventually effect many.

The wonderful writer, Marianne Williamson, gave a beautiful speech at President Mandela’s inauguration in 1992. She spoke beautifully about letting our light shine and why its so important to do. A portion of her speech has been included below. Take a read, absorb its message and ensure you do whatever you can to let you light shine bright.

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.
