This was a favorite of mine - I checked it out over and over from the school library. In second grade I wasn't quite ready to give up pictures, but a strong enough reader that I needed more text than the typical picture book. I had such fond memories of it, I just had to find it for my own kids. Many copies are expensive, but I finally found one reasonably priced on ebay a few years ago. My kids also enjoyed it!
This was (and still is) on of my favorite books of all time. It's a grand adventure with magical settings and fantastic characters that fire the imagination. I read this to my daughter a chapter a night (or two, at her insistence) for the past couple of weeks and she loved it, too. In the Harry Potter era it is a crime that this magnificent tome remains out of print. If you ever find a copy in a used bookstore do not hesitate to buy it!
My mother read this to me when I was little and, after I learned to read on my own, I read it many times. I found a copy and read it to my daughter who also enjoyed it. It’s still one of my favorites!
Seems to be out of print but I enjoyed the book my wife bought for our daughter, albeit in a used condition. The book follows the tale of Polly and Oliver who are visited by Miranda the Good Witch who is searching for her cat Cactus. Together, they head to the Land of the Goblins, completing a number of quests for the king. It has some cool illustrations as well. Although I kept thinking of stranger danger, it was a fun book to read to my daughter, and is not intended to be scary, rather an adventure story. Hopefully it will receive another print run.
This is one of my favorite childhood books. The illustrations are fantastic. As am I now an adult, the story doesn't hold up quite as much as I thought. The goblins are creepy and the witch is goofy. Read it.
My younger brother has talked about this book for many years, and both his sons--now adults--also loved it. It is quite rare now but he found a reasonably-priced copy for me and our granddaughter.
I can see why he would have liked it as a little boy in the 1970s. It is just creepy enough but everything turns out well; the peril feels manageable, like a carnival ride. The illustrations are quite impressive.
This is a cherished book from my childhood. It’s full of magic and adventure, reading it instantly transports me back. The illustrations are absolutely stunning.
