The author of over 80 books in a little over a decade of writing, Dan Gutman has written on topics from computers to baseball. Beginning his freelance career as a nonfiction author dealing mostly with sports for adults and young readers, Gutman has concentrated on juvenile fiction since 1995. His most popular titles include the time-travel sports book Honus and Me and its sequels, and a clutch of baseball books, including The Green Monster from Left Field. From hopeful and very youthful presidential candidates to stunt men, nothing is off limits in Gutman's fertile imagination. As he noted on his author Web site, since writing his first novel, They Came from Centerfield, in 1994, he has been hooked on fiction. "It was fun to write, kids loved it, and I discovered how incredibly rewarding it is to take a blank page and turn it into a WORLD."

Gutman was born in New York City in 1955, but moved to Newark, New Jersey the following year and spent his youth there.

I'm reading this series with my 9-year-old. It's surprisingly funny and more enjoyable (from the adult perspective) than many of the "emerging reader" books I've worked on with kids.

Cute, funny book that's just right for chapter book readers. Some of the "boy humor" and attitude was a bit much for me (not all boys are that obnoxious, ha), but I can see how kids would appreciate it. This is the kind of book that gets kids excited to read and that I would recommend as a librarian. The first book I've read in the My Weird School series, but I'd like to find out more about the wacky teachers and weird happenings at Ella Mentry School!

It's Valentines Day, and love is in the air, or is it in the water? Only Mr. Louie the hippie crossing guard knows for sure. Mr. Macky and Miss Daisy are getting married, and A.j. Michael, Ryan, and Neil do everything they can to stop it. The question is will they be able to stop the forces of love before it's too late? Things a little weird at Ella Mentry before this story ends.

Mr. Louie Is Screwy is about Ella Mentry's hippie crossing guard. Mr. Louie really loves love, so he puts a love potion in the school water fountain. Suddenly unlikely couples start forming everywhere - students are kissing each other and teachers are falling in love with eachother. AJ's teacher, Miss Daisy, even decides to get married to another teacher. AJ is determined to break the spell by ruining Miss Daisy's wedding.

Honestly, I loved certain parts of this book, especially the character Mr. Louie. However, I completely despised other parts of it. I struggled to read about kids acting so malicious at a wedding and going out of their way to try and ruin it and break up their teacher. I know they believed in the love potion but it was a little too mean-spirited for me.

Mr. Louie is screwy By:Jim Pailliot
In the beginning Aj hate s the L word and the H word because they all mean love or something like that and they also hate school. So they have a guy coming to the school and his name is Mr. Louie and they are not happy about this because he is telling how always love or be nice. Mr. Louie put love poison in the water fountain and that was my favorite part in the book.

Oh, Miss Daisy! I love how you feign incompetence and beat the kids at their own game. Giving you a few chapters to shine with the surprisingly delightful Mr. Macky (who barely featured in his own book, hence the surprise at his ability to play mindgames with the kids) was a great way to end the book. Bravo!

Wow... Never knew anyone who went to that much trouble to stop a wedding. Luckily, he failed. I am not a romantic, but I do think people have a right to choose to get married without a second grader ruining it.

Screwy love story

Love is the theme of this book if you can dig it. There is nothing like a Dan Gutman story at bedtime for my kiddos. These stories are hilarious and keep my kids engaged.

Reading this book to my son after it came home from his classroom book collection, I was offended by the sexism presented in the content.

My daughter LOVED this one. Perhaps because it was "loved" themed so she enjoyed it more than the others?
